Masbate

Admittedly, my visit to Masbate was confined to spending several days at a dive resort on Ticao Island. I needed a break from the pick-up and go of solo backpacking, and by then it was nearly two months of continuous travel through the Bicol region.

Snorkelling across the Philippines has become one of my great loves. I’ve become fascinated with the underwater world and its vastness.

A cabin by the beach, on a cove that opened into Ticao Pass, lazily reading on a hammock then looking up to imagine the Manila-Acapulco galleons sail past - scenes that I imagined would have terrified the locals who lived here, centuries ago - was everything I wanted.

I asked the resort for a local guide recommendation and arranged to rent a motorbike the next day to visit other parts of Ticao Island. My favourite kind of travel days!

Being in close proximity to these beautiful horses was an unexpected treat. I could also watch them forever.
